A Brief History of Kemble:
Kemble Pianos, a British piano manufacturer, was founded in 1911 by Michael Kemble in London. The company initially gained recognition for producing well-crafted, affordable upright pianos suited to British homes and educational institutions. Known for their durability and quality, Kemble pianos became a staple in schools and homes across the UK.
In the 1960s, Kemble partnered with Yamaha, which allowed the company to adopt advanced production techniques and improve the overall quality of their pianos. This collaboration led to Kemble’s rise in prominence as Yamaha used Kemble’s factory to produce some of its models for the European market. By the 1980s, Kemble had become the only remaining large-scale piano manufacturer in the UK, and in 1986, the company received a Royal Warrant, marking it as the official piano supplier to Queen Elizabeth II.
In 2009, after nearly a century in business, Kemble ceased production in the UK, and Yamaha fully integrated the brand, moving production to Yamaha’s facilities in Asia. Today, Kemble-branded pianos are manufactured by Yamaha and continue to be sold, appreciated for their rich heritage and English tonal character blended with Yamaha’s precision.
