A brief history of Chappell:

Chappell originated from Chappell & Co., a London-based music publishing company founded in 1811 by Samuel Chappell. Initially focused on music publishing, the company soon expanded into instrument manufacturing, producing pianos that quickly became popular across the UK and Europe. Known for their high-quality build and rich tone, Chappell pianos were favoured by musicians and institutions, including the British royal family.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chappell’s pianos were manufactured in a large facility in Camden, London. The company continued to thrive, producing a range of upright and grand pianos, many of which remain treasured instruments today. However, like many historic piano manufacturers, Chappell faced challenges as the market changed post-WWII.

In the 1970s, Chappell merged with Kemble & Co., another British piano manufacturer, which allowed the brand to continue under the Kemble name. Eventually, Yamaha, which had a longstanding partnership with Kemble, acquired the company, and Chappell pianos are no longer produced as an independent brand. However, vintage Chappell pianos remain appreciated for their craftsmanship and unique sound.
